The Watch That Started Every Dive Watch

About the Submariner

The Submariner is the watch most people picture when they hear the word Rolex. We carry 87 of them right now, from the plain black 126610LN that every collector says to buy first, to the famous nicknames everybody knows by sight: the green Hulk, the green-bezel Kermit, the newer Starbucks, the two-tone Bluesy, and the all-blue Smurf. Japanese tier from $359, Swiss tier from $999. Same case shape, same 40mm silhouette, same ceramic bezel, same Oyster bracelet.

Super Clone Rolex Submariner

Why the Submariner Still Matters

Rolex put the first Submariner out in 1953. It was built for divers — people who actually needed a watch that wouldn't flood at depth — and it was the first wristwatch you could buy that was waterproof to 100 meters. That sounds like nothing today, but in 1953 it was a real engineering problem that nobody else had solved. Within ten years almost every serious dive watch on earth looked like a Submariner, because everybody else was copying the formula. The Omega Seamaster, the Tudor Black Bay, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, the Doxa SUB — they all owe the shape of their cases, the idea of the rotating bezel, and the position of the crown to what Rolex did in 1953.

Seventy years later the Submariner is still the most recognized watch on earth. Part of that is James Bond wearing one in Dr. No in 1962. Part of it is the shape itself — 40mm steel case, black dial, black bezel, three-link Oyster bracelet — which is so clean that it works with a t-shirt or a dinner jacket. And part of it is that the watch barely changed. A 1960 Submariner and a 2024 Submariner look almost identical from across a room. Rolex has tweaked the dial text, swapped the aluminum bezel for ceramic, added a few millimeters to the case, but the silhouette is the same one your grandfather would recognize.

The Submariner family has collected a small zoo of nicknames over the years, and the nicknames are how most people actually talk about them. The plain black 126610LN is the default — the one every collector says to buy first because it never goes out of style. The Hulk (116610LV, all green) was made from 2010 to 2020 and got discontinued, which is why the price on a real one doubled overnight. The Kermit (16610LV, green bezel with a black dial) was the original green Sub from 2003 to 2010, also discontinued. The Starbucks (126610LV) is the current green version Rolex released in 2020. The Bluesy (116613LB) is the two-tone steel and yellow gold with a blue dial. The Smurf (116619LB) is the all-blue one in solid white gold. We carry every one of them on both tiers, so the discontinued refs are on the shelf here when they are not on the shelf anywhere else.

A note on what we copy and what we don't. We get the case shape right. We get the 40mm size right, the lug width, the weight in your hand, the Cerachrom-style ceramic bezel that won't fade or scratch, the 904L-grade steel finish, the crown guards, the Oyster bracelet, the clasp action, and the dial layout down to the position of the crown logo. Both the Japanese and the Swiss tier give you the look and the feel that fools every non-specialist who looks at your wrist. Two places we fall short and you should know about. The first is water resistance. The real Submariner is rated to 300 meters of diving depth. Our Swiss tier handles hand washing, rain, a splash from the pool — say 30 meters in the real world. Our Japanese tier is not a water watch. Neither tier is a dive watch. If you actually go diving, buy a genuine Rolex or a dive computer. The second is the movement. The real thing runs a Caliber 3235 with a 70-hour power reserve and a COSC chronometer certificate. Our Swiss tier gives you the 70 hours and the smooth sweep, the Japanese tier gives you 40 hours. Neither is COSC-certified. If you wear it on your wrist, no human will ever know. If you put it on a timing machine, that is where the gap shows up.

What to Expect

💰

Japanese From $359, Swiss From $999

Two tiers, two prices. Japanese Miyota automatic from $359 if you want the look at the lowest price. Swiss ETA-clone from $999 with a 70-hour power reserve and a smoother sweep.

Ceramic Bezel That Won't Fade

Real ceramic Cerachrom-style bezel insert. Won't scratch from desk use, won't fade in sunlight, looks identical in hand to the genuine Rolex bezel. Same on both tiers.

🔩

904L-Grade Oystersteel Case

The same hard, corrosion-resistant steel Rolex uses. Gives you the weight and the finish that cheap fakes miss. Same alloy on both tiers — the steel is not where we cut corners.

💡

Chromalight Lume, Blue Glow

The dial markers and hands glow blue in the dark, same color and roughly the same duration as the real Chromalight. Good for about 6 to 8 hours on a full charge. Works on both tiers.

🚫

Not a Dive Watch — Be Honest

The real Submariner is rated to 300 meters. Ours is not. Swiss tier handles hand washing, rain, and a pool splash. Japanese tier should stay dry. If you need a real dive watch, buy the real one.

Submariner Replica — Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Hulk, Kermit, Bluesy, Smurf, and Starbucks?

These are the nicknames collectors use for specific Submariner references, and they are the easiest way to tell them apart. The Hulk (116610LV) has a green dial AND a green bezel — it is the only all-green Submariner Rolex ever made, and it was discontinued in 2020. The Kermit (16610LV) has a green bezel on a black dial and was discontinued back in 2010. The Starbucks (126610LV) is the current green one Rolex released in 2020 — green bezel, black dial, same idea as the Kermit but with a ceramic bezel instead of aluminum. The Bluesy (116613LB) is two-tone steel and yellow gold with a blue dial and blue bezel. The Smurf (116619LB) is the solid white gold version with an all-blue dial and bezel. We carry every single one of these on both the Japanese tier ($359) and the Swiss tier ($999), including the discontinued Hulk and Kermit.

Is the super clone Submariner actually waterproof?

Honest answer: no, not the way the real one is. The genuine Rolex Submariner is rated to 300 meters because it uses factory-tested gaskets, a pressure-tested case, and a screw-down crown assembly that costs more to build than most complete replicas. Our Swiss tier is safe for hand washing, rain, and a splash from the pool — think 30 meters of real-world water resistance. Our Japanese tier should be kept dry. Neither tier is a dive watch. If you actually go diving, buy a genuine Submariner or use a dive computer. Wearing a replica in the ocean is how people destroy their watches.

What movement is inside the Submariner replica?

Two options. The Japanese tier uses a Miyota automatic movement with about 40 hours of power reserve. It is reliable, accurate within a few seconds a day, and easy to service anywhere in the world because the parts are standard. The Swiss tier uses a Swiss ETA-clone movement (usually a 2824 variant) with about 70 hours of power reserve, which matches the real Rolex Caliber 3235 number. Both have the smooth sweeping seconds hand that tells you it is automatic. Neither is a COSC-certified chronometer, so the real thing still runs tighter under lab conditions. On your wrist, day to day, you cannot tell them apart from a genuine Rolex without opening the caseback.

Which Submariner should I actually buy?

Buy the plain black 126610LN. I know it sounds boring next to the Hulk and the Bluesy, but it is the watch the Submariner is supposed to be, it goes with literally everything you own, and you will not get tired of it. The colored ones are fun the first month and exhausting the third month — a green dial gets loud fast. The two-tone Bluesy is the second pick if you want something that works with a suit and a shirt. The Hulk is tempting because it is discontinued and rare, but the green is a lot of green to wear every day, and most people quietly regret it. The vintage nicknames like the Red Sub are collector pieces you only buy if you already own a black one. Start with black, add a second one later if you still want color.

Is the bezel insert really ceramic?

Yes. Both the Japanese and the Swiss tier Submariner replicas use a real ceramic bezel insert with painted or filled markers. It will not fade in sunlight, it will not scratch from normal desk use, and it feels exactly like the real Rolex Cerachrom in hand. This is one of the most expensive parts of a quality super clone to build and one of the easiest ways to tell a quality replica from a cheap fake — cheap fakes use aluminum or plastic bezels that scratch and fade within months. Ours do not.

Does the Oyster bracelet clasp work like the real one?

Yes. The Oyster bracelet on the Submariner uses a working Glidelock extension system on both tiers. You can extend the clasp in small 2mm steps to fit over a thicker sleeve or to loosen the watch on a hot day when your wrist swells. The micro-adjust click is real, it holds its position, and the clasp closes with the same solid snap you get on a genuine Rolex. The bracelet hardware is identical between the Japanese and the Swiss tier — the only difference between the two tiers is inside the case, not on the wrist.
