The Explorer II was built in 1971 for cave explorers and polar researchers who needed to distinguish AM from PM in environments without natural daylight cues. Reference 216570 is the 42mm generation introduced in 2011, replacing the 40mm 16570 that ran for two decades. The orange 24-hour hand is the signature carry-over, a direct nod to the 1655 "Steve McQueen" of the 1970s.
42mm 904L-style stainless steel case with brushed top surfaces and polished bevels. Fixed engraved 24-hour bezel in steel (the smooth-edged variant in this configuration), black lacquer dial with applied Maxi-style indices, Mercedes hour hand, and the orange arrow-tipped GMT hand pointing to the bezel scale. White-gold-tone surrounds on the indices for cleaner legibility against the matte black.
